Luxury Round-the-World Cruise Suspended in Cambodia Due to Rising Fuel Costs
A multi-year luxury cruise has been abruptly suspended in Cambodia after soaring fuel costs forced the operator to end the voyage. Hundreds of passengers are now stranded and facing the loss of their homes, while the company works on temporary living arrangements and business restructuring.
A luxury cruise ship embarking on a multi-year, round-the-world voyage has been forced to suspend operations in Cambodia. The abrupt halt comes as soaring fuel prices and high fuel costs make it impossible to continue the journey, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
The vessel, identified in some reports as the luxury MV Odyssey and the Villa Vie Odyssey, had set sail on a trip marketed to combine long-term living at sea with global travel. While some sources state the journey was slated for three and a half years, others report a three-year voyage that had already been underway for two years across the seven continents.
Cruise operator Villa Vie Residences announced it would disembark both passengers and crew while restructuring its business. The company is currently working with the affected travelers to provide temporary living arrangements as they deal with the sudden end of their floating homes.
