FCC to Vote on Allowing Prisons to Use Cellphone Jammers
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr announced a planned vote next month to relax the agency's opposition to prison cell phone jamming. The proposed rules would allow correctional facilities to use signal jamming equipment.
The Federal Communications Commission is moving toward a potential policy shift regarding cell phone signal jammers in correctional facilities. Agency Chairman Brendan Carr announced that a vote will take place on November 19 regarding new rules that would permit prisons to utilize signal jamming technology.
Previously, the agency maintained a long-standing opposition to the use of such equipment. Under Section 333 and the Communications Act, radiofrequency jammers are generally banned.
The upcoming vote next month will determine whether correctional facilities will be granted the ability to use these devices to block illegal cell phone signals.
