Google, Meta and TikTok Sue California to Block Child Protection Law

Image: The Guardian

Major tech companies including Google, Meta and TikTok have filed a lawsuit against California. They are seeking to block a new state law designed to protect minors from compulsive online use and addiction risks.

Tech giants Google, Meta and TikTok have taken legal action against California in an effort to prevent the enforcement of a recently enacted state law. The legislation aims to safeguard children from the addiction risks associated with social media platforms by restricting specific features that could lead to compulsive use.

Under the contested Assembly Bill 1709, platforms are required to eliminate psychologically exploitative features. This includes banning tools such as autoplay that encourage prolonged engagement among minor users.

The companies are currently moving through the legal system to halt the implementation of these new requirements. The outcome of the lawsuit will determine whether the state can enforce the restrictions on social media design aimed at minors.
